Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica or Panama, Chiriqui, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A large and finely delineated gold pendant depicting a standing human, possibly a shaman, with a secure loop on the verso, making this piece quite wearable. This shaman stands with hands to his waist, holding spiraled objects in each hand, masterfully worked coil motifs ornament his curved headdress or coiffure, perhaps representing curls. His coffee-bean eyes, arched brows that resolve to his temples show this golden image was created by the indigenous of Mesoamerica. Cast by the lost-wax or cire perdue process, the composition of the piece is elegantly balanced with myriad detail. A stupendous example demonstrating a mastery of the medium as well as an aesthetic inspired by both the natural and supernatural worlds. Size: 3" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 10.2 cm); gold quality: 56 to 62% (13.4 to 14.9 karats); weight: 48.3 grams
