Description:

Ancient. Western Greece, Rhodes, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A mold-made terracotta protome depicting a female head, presumably a goddess, wearing a himation drawn up over her head, with long locks of hair gracefully framing her visage. Her face displays wide, almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, slender cheeks, a wide chin, and puffy lips drawn into a slight smile. Although the exact significance of this signature Archaic smile is unknown, scholars suggest that the ancient Greeks associated it with good health and well-being. Size: 3.125" W x 4.625" H (7.9 cm x 11.7 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.

The protome is a type of bust made by pressing a thin layer of terracotta into a single mold. These were first made in Rhodes, but from the early fifth century BCE onwards they spread throughout Greece. Originally, this piece would have been brightly painted.
