Description:

Ancient. Western Greece, Archaic Greece, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A pottery bust of a woman - probably a goddess - with flowing hair, a drooping veil and realistic facial features such as a button-shaped nose and closed almond-shaped eyes. Protomes like these were first made in Rhodes, but spread throughout Greece from the early fifth century BCE onwards. This piece would have been brightly painted with layers of vibrant pigmentation and the details would have been much more well-defined. Size: 3" W x 4.25" H (7.6 cm x 10.8 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
