Description:

Classical World, Northern Italy, Etruria, ca. early 5th century BCE. A gorgeous wheel-thrown pottery olpe (or pouring vessel) presenting a classic form comprised of a slightly concave base, a globular body, a funnel-form neck, a flared rim, and an applied strap handle. Amplifying its beauty is a wonderful decorative register featuring two horizontal bands of interwoven semicircular striations with a beige-hued spot painted inside each open space, all atop a light-orange ground, with each section separated and enclosed by crimson-hued stripes. The upper body area as well as the area near the base are decorated by drooping espresso-hued tongue designs, while the handle, neck, and upper rim exhibit a solid dark-brown coloration; a large beige "X" is painted on the rim just above the handle. A classic example of Etruscan-era pottery replete with delicate embellishments and wonderful artistry! Size: 7.5" H (19 cm).

During this time, Etruscan pottery and other artwork showed the influence of eastern trade connections with the city – creating art with stylized plants, zoomorphic designs, and abstract geometric motifs inspired by the Levant, Egypt, and Assyria. This is referred to as the “Orientalizing Period.” The incised details and play on light and dark color schemas were brought by trade from Corinth and the Near-East to Etruria, which inspired a new wave of abstract yet beautiful artistic creations.
