Description:

West Africa, Ghana, ca. mid-20th century CE. A carved wooden piece of folk art depicting a boat in the form of a anthropomorphic crocodilian-fish, gripping a prone human figure in its jaws. Painted on one side is the phrase "Slave Trade Boat," with the Akan alphabet translation on the opposite side. The interior of the boat contains sockets, likely intended to hold separately carved figures that would have rowed the vessel. The monstrous imagery powerfully evokes the dark history of colonization and the transatlantic slave trade. Size: 26" L x 4.5" W x 4.5" H (66 cm x 11.4 cm x 11.4 cm)
