Description:

West Africa, Ivory Coast, Senufo culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A double neck rest, likely intended for couples, carved from a single piece of hardwood, possibly teak. While it may have functioned as a low stool, it seems it would have been a tight fit for two individuals to sit on simultaneously. Headrests were traditionally used while sleeping to protect elaborate coiffures, which could take hours to arrange. Hairstyles were an important expression of identity, reflecting the wearer's wealth, marital status, age, and gender. As intimate personal items, a double headrest symbolized unity between spouses. Size: 24" L x 6" W x 4.5" H (61 cm x 15.2 cm x 11.4 cm)
