Description:

Central/Eastern Africa, possibly Sudan, Dinka or Bongo culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden club or prestige staff with a stylized head featuring a heart-shaped face carved in low relief. The neck and upper third of the handle are studded with tiny brass nails, adding a decorative and symbolic element. Ceremonial staffs or scepters, often modeled after war clubs, were symbols of authority and power for their owners. The carved heads or effigies on such staffs frequently represented revered ancestors. Size: 19.5" L x 3.5" W (49.5 cm x 8.9 cm); 19.75" H (50.2 cm) on included custom stand.
