Description:

East Africa, Ethiopia, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A collection of three hair fly whisks, two featuring wooden handles and one crafted from bovine bone. The hair, though probably ox hair, may also be sourced from horse, antelope, or other grassland ungulate species. While fly whisks serve a practical role in repelling insects, they also carry ceremonial significance in many cultures, symbolizing the authority of village chiefs and used in dance ceremonies. The simple design of the handles suggests a primarily utilitarian function. Size: 29" L x 2" W (73.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico USA collection; ex-Ned Jacob Studio collection, acquired from the Maasai in the 1970s
