Description:

Germany, ca. 1500 to 1900 CE. This is an iron billhook blade with a long, gradually narrowing tang; a wooden handle would most likely have once been attached. The billhook is a cutting tool that has been used around the world, and most likely since the Bronze Age, for agriculture and forestry. The blade is straight near the handle and then has an increasingly strong curve towards the end; it is sharpened on the inside of the curve. In German, the billhook is also known as the Rodeaxt or clearing axe. It is likely that this tool was used in a wine-producing region of Germany. Size: 12.25" L x 2.5" W (31.1 cm x 6.4 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages. Ex-Birgit Andersen.
