Description:

Germany or Austria, ca. 15th to 16th centuries CE. This is a thrusting spear made of a long thin spike of square cross section; at the base of the spike is a rondel guard to protect the hands. This particular one has an "R" and "18" stamped on the case of the spike. The majority of surviving ahlspiesse are in museums in Vienna and the Metropolitan Museum of Art; during their time of use, they were depicted in numerous piece of medieval art, like my personal favorite, Tres Belles Heures, a French Book of Hours from 1400, and as a woodcut from the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493. Size: 75.75" L (192.4 cm).
