Description:

Central Asia, modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. This is a stucco head of the Buddha with a very different look than many of the others that you see -- it is modelled in the Graeco-Buddhist tradition that was still prevalent in central Asia in this time period following the wake of Hellenistic influences intermingling with Buddhist ideas from the south and east. Buddha is depicted with almond eyes, an expressive mouth, and tight, curled hair. He does not have any of the later hallmarks of Buddhist art, such as elongated earlobes or the ushnisha. However, the piece may once have had a tight coil of his hair atop his head -- this may have chipped off. This is an opportunity to have one of the older, more unique versions of Buddha. Size: 6" H x 4" W; with custom stand, 7-1/2" H (15.2 cm x 10.2 cm; 19 cm).
