Description:

Byzantine, ca. 5th century CE. This is a large bronze round bodied vessel with a tapered neck and a short line design on the neck and bottom. It has a well-formed trefoil lip and no foot. This oinochoe, from the Greek oinos - wine and cheo - I pour, would have been a utilitarian vessel for pouring wine whose shape passed almost unchanged from classical Greece to the Byzantine world. Vessels like these also became votive deposits. These Byzantine bronze examples of oinochoe would have been cast whole and had the handle attached separately. Size: 11" H x 6" W (28 cm x 15.2 cm).
