Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A beautiful seated depiction of Buddha, hand-carved from grey schist in high relief. Buddha sits with his hands in the Dhyana mudra, a gesture of meditation, with the hands placed in the lap, right hand on left, with fingers fully stretched out and palms facing upwards. His slender body dons flowing robes, and his hair is presented in a traditional top knot. Beneath his seat is are two seated figures holding their hands in front of their bodies before a tiered stupa. A fabulous depiction! Size: 2" W x 3.625" H (5.1 cm x 9.2 cm).
