Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A lovely figural panel, hand-carved from grey schist, depicting the Buddha with an attendant at his side standing before an elderly beggar. Buddha stands in flowing ankle-length robes with one hand held aloft and the other draped at his side, and is depicted with a serene visage in front of a round halo. The attendant standing behind holds a scroll in one hand, and has dangling earrings situated beneath a large topknot. The beggar sits beneath a structural overhang with one hand extended, perhaps requesting some small donation from the Buddha. The figures are presented above an incised lattice-work border panel. A wonderful depiction of the Buddha from ancient Central Asia! Size: 3.875" W x 3.5" H (9.8 cm x 8.9 cm).
