Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A high relief, hand-carved grey schist panel depicting a standing figure next to a tall panel of floral motifs. Perhaps an attendant, the figure has bulb-form hair with a large topknot and stands in a shin-length robe while holding a gathering of leaves in his right hand. He has a large mustache beneath a slender nose, with almond eyes, a rounded chin, and a squat neck line defining his countenance. This piece is likely from a larger schist carving. Size: 7.25" W x 7.875" H (18.4 cm x 20 cm).
