Description:

East Asia, Japan, Jomon period, ca. 5000 to 1000 BCE. A collection of five stone tools, made from a variety of materials, used for hunting and chopping wood. One is an obsidian arrow point; one a slate axe; one a mottled slate spear head; a fourth a chert arrow head; and a fifth a basalt chopper. Each was hand knapped in a painstaking process, and, at least in the case of the obsidian point, the material used to make it was probably traded a long distance. Bows and arrows and stone spears were used by the Jomon for hunting deer, boar, and hare, often with the assistance of dogs. Size of largest: 5.5" W x 2" H (14 cm x 5.1 cm); size of case: 12" W x 7.6" H (30.5 cm x 19.3 cm)

  • Condition: The slate example has a loss to the bottom of the stem; otherwise they are intact. The small grey chert one has kanji handwritten on one side, and the basalt one has a single character handwritten on one side, probably representing collection numbers.
