Description:

East Asia, Japan, Late Jomon period to Yayoi culture, ca. 3000 to 0 BCE. Five obsidian and five grey-brown chert lithics, hand-knapped and of varying form. From the beginning of the Jomon period onward, stone arrowheads and spearheads become common archaeological finds, and their frequency has been used to assess how important different food sources were at different time periods. Towards the end of the Jomon period, hunting became very important again (after having been replaced for a time by agriculture), and stone points like these are found in increasing numbers. Meanwhile, obsidian became more common throughout the period, indicating the rise of trade centers for the relatively scarce material and a rise in social stratification as powerful people gained control of this trade. Size of largest point: 1.05" W x 2.45" H (2.7 cm x 6.2 cm); size of custom display case: 15.1" W x 12.05" H (38.4 cm x 30.6 cm)
