Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved wooden sarcophagus mask with pouty lips, a slender nose, almond-shaped eyes with white sclera and black pupils, and a simple cap that rests high on the broad forehead. Thin layers of white gesso are applied across the face and painted with pink-red pigment to mimic a fleshy tone. Four original dowel holes are visible across the obverse and reverse, and one original dowel remains in one of the top holes. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only.   • Condition: Losses to areas of periphery, verso, and one corner of forehead as shown. Fading to original gesso and pigmentation, with several stable fissures and desiccation commensurate with age. Great traces of original painted gesso across obverse, and nice earthen deposits throughout.
