Description:

West Africa, Mali, Dogon people, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A carved wooden monkey mask, a curved face resembling a simian, with a monkey perched on top. Rare, the mask is painted white (now aged to a dark brown patina), with black dots scattered across the surface. The Dama is an important Dogon ritual ceremony that marks the passing of an elder, symbolizing their transition to the afterlife, and includes music, dance, and mask performances. The monkey mask, often worn during the Dama, represents the mischievous and wild nature of monkeys, which are associated with social transgression, disorder, and rebellious behavior. Through its gestures, the monkey mask symbolizes outcasts and critiques those who defy societal norms, highlighting the boundary between humans and animals and reflecting the community's values. Size: 6" L x 7" W x 19" H (15.2 cm x 17.8 cm x 48.3 cm)
