Description:

West Africa, Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), probably Yaure, possibly Baule, or Guro culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A superb wood mask the slitted eyes and lids painted with white kaolin pigment. The lips pursed and raised scarification marks across the face. The face extends from a thick wooden backing with a deep concavity for the wearer and pierced for suspension and attaching a costume. The Yaure, Baule, and Guro cultures share significant similarities in their mask-making traditions, which reflect cultural ideals of beauty and spiritual values. Masks from these cultures often feature dark, polished patinas and are used in ceremonial performances, such as the Baule Mblo or the Guro Goli, to honor prominent community members. While the Yaure masks are distinct with serrated edges and dark, unpainted surfaces used in funeral rites. Size: 8" L x 6" W x 14" H (20.3 cm x 15.2 cm x 35.6 cm)

  • Condition: Abrasions and losses to the wood around the rim and perforation on the left side. Old loss to the sides of the face to the protruding spikes and coiffure. Stable hairline fissure on the lower left of the chin area and several other areas. Great signs of age and use.
