Description:

West Africa, Burkina Faso, possibly Nunuma, Winiama, or Bwa peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A large ceremonial mask featuring an abstract visage with protruding eyes and a gaping mouth. Atop the head is a broad crest panel, resembling a hornbill beak in profile. Seated on the crest is a standing female figure with a cloth tied around her waist. The surface is painted in white, blue, and red hues. The verso is hollowed out with pierced holes along the rim, likely for attaching to a costume or raffia tassels, and a handle protrudes from the chin for support. Masks from Burkina Faso often blend stylized human and animal features to represent bush spirits and spiritual entities, frequently depicted in abstract forms where the specific animal may be difficult to discern. Commonly symbolized creatures include antelope, buffalo, warthog, hornbill, hyena, and snakes. Size: 8" L x 12.5" W x 27" H (20.3 cm x 31.8 cm x 68.6 cm)
