North America, Mexico, probably Guerrero or Michoacan, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden festival mask depicting a character known as El Barbon (translated as "The Bearded One" or "The Bearded Man"). The man presents with a bushy beard composed of several curls, an incised mustache above petite lips, a slender nose, protruding cheeks, almond-shaped eyes beneath openwork slits, and a tall forehead, all beneath a curly coiffure. Within the recessed eye sockets are intricate blue-and-white glass eyes with black pupils that give the expressive countenance a piercing gaze. Size: 9.625" W x 16" H (24.4 cm x 40.6 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to one side of periphery, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks to face, peripheries, and verso, with light encrustations on glass eyes, and softening to some finer details. Great earthen deposits and patina throughout. Mounted on verso with metal wire for display.
