Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Western Highlands, Maring people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large shield of a rectangular form with slightly rounded corners and a woven reed panel on the top periphery. The front of the shield is decorated with a large, unpainted central triangle surrounded with broad triangles shaped with thick red and white pigment. The painted obverse is studded with several small wooden pegs, and a trio of drilled holes retain the original cloth strip handle. Size: 23.25" W x 50.75" H (59.1 cm x 128.9 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

  • Condition: Restoration and stabilization to fissures/losses to one area of top and bottom, with light adhesive residue along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions to obverse, peripheries, and verso, with a few stable fissures, and chips to some wooden pegs. Nice earthen deposits and great traces of original pigment throughout. Mounted with modern brass suspension chain and loops on verso for display.
