Lot 317
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A cute, small, redware dog, depicted in a dynamic manner, with legs splayed, short tail curled up, perky ears, and mouth open in a bark. Small pottery figures were made to be placed into shaft tombs in this culture; perhaps this little dog was made for someone who had a beloved pet. Dogs also were seen as journey mates to the underworld, so that may have been part of this perky fellow's symbolism. Size: 4" L x 2.35" W x 2.75" H (10.2 cm x 6 cm x 7 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Peter Arnovick collection, San Francisco, CA acquired before 1980
