Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 CE. This lovely and petite textile sack is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in cream, black, brown, and crimson hues. The composition of the bag is constituted from several horizontal solid-colored rows which alternate between light and dark, and the top fringe is created from black and white fibers woven together to form a singular strand of color. The strap features circular and wave-shaped motifs against a brown ground, and all are outlined in black fibers. Mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 11.625" L x 4.25" W (29.5 cm x 10.8 cm).

Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
