Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, late Sican (Lambayeque) to early Chimu, ca. 900 to 1100 CE. This earthen-toned section of textile is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in shades of brown, umber, aqua, black, gold, and beige. The composition is comprised of four anthropomorphic figures, in two directionally-alternating rows, which feature large bird-like heads, ornate crested/plumed headdresses, and multi-sectional clubs of some unknown type being carried by each. Four additional abstract bird-shaped figures hover above the heads of each avian warrior. Mounted to a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 5.5" L x 4.75" W (14 cm x 12.1 cm).

Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia between 1971 and 1972
