Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery figure depicting a seated drummer with bent legs and an upright posture. The figure's right hand holds a small ball or percussive beater, and the other hand is resting on a small cylindrical drum in front of the figure's legs. An ornate horned headdress is wrapped around the figure's head which indicates that he is a shaman, perhaps performing a simple beat to facilitate a meditative state of mind. A small hole near the back of the head acts as a mouthpiece for the whistle, and still produces a high-pitched sound when used. Size: 4" W x 4.5" H (10.2 cm x 11.4 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
