Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A striking, hand-built pottery bowl of a triangular form with a round but stable base, tall walls, a deep basin, and a thick, rolled rim. Like the figurehead on a boat prow, this highly-burnished bowl features a finely-sculpted abstract anthropomorphic face on the front with a petite nose, rectangular eyes with two indented corners each, and an open mouth. The face is adorned with zigzagging cream-hued stripes, and a rectangular register of red latticework patterns and brown concentric bars decorate the sides and back of the bowl. Size: 8.1" L x 4.9" W x 3.375" H (20.6 cm x 12.4 cm x 8.6 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
