Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely pottery bowl with a round but stable base, convex walls, a rolled rim, and a deep basin. The front of the vessel is decorated with a highly-stylized human face replete with impressed triangular eyes, bulging ears, a raised nose with delineated nostrils, and a protruding mouth with a rounded chin. Zigzagging motifs in hues of cream and grey surround the eyes atop the highly-burnished, crimson-hued ground, and a decorative register of colorful parallel stripes adorn the upper shoulder. The base is presented in its natural buffware color as is the interior basin. Size: 8.8" W x 3.75" H (22.4 cm x 9.5 cm).
