Description:

East Asia, China, late Ming to early Qing Dynasty, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A beautiful carved wooden statue of a standing Buddha or bodhisattva, eyes closed or cast downwards, and hands held in the vitarka mudra of teaching and discussion. The thumb and forefinger of both hands touch to form a circle symbolizing the "Wheel of the Teaching." This may be a representation of Guanyin, the sacred Bodhisattva of compassion and would have been set into a shrine niche. Robes cover both shoulders, the drapery cascading over the figure's arms, the bare feet protruding from the hem, but the chest is left partially bare. A short cap that once had protruding embellishments covers the tranquil head, and the ears are pierced for additional ornamentation. Size: 4" L x 4" W x 13.25" H (10.2 cm x 10.2 cm x 33.7 cm); 14.75" H (37.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Guanyin, known outside China as Avalokitesvara, "The Lord Who Gazes Down At The World", is often portrayed as both male or female, and the soft features and androgynous body of this example gives an impression of ethereal beauty.
