Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A beautiful textile strap fragment composed of tightly-woven cotton fibers in hues of crimson, fuchsia, jet-black, sunflower yellow, and wheat. The strap displays one partial and thirteen complete abstract birds with stocky beads, a singular discoid eye, and V-shaped bodies with triangular wings and tails. Each avian figure is separated by a trio of vertical stripes of either yellow-and-black or red-and-pink combinations. Mounted on a fabric-lined wooden frame. Size (textile): 37.2" L x 4.25" W (94.5 cm x 10.8 cm); size (frame): 46" L x 8.8" W (116.8 cm x 22.4 cm).
