Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fine, hollow-formed female pottery "star-gazer" cuchimilco figure standing on thick legs and flat feet. The figure bears delineated genitalia below a broad abdomen, with large concentric lines painted in black across her legs, chest, and arms. A rectangular panel centered on the chest contains a series of abstract linear details. A trio of pattern-molded bead necklaces wrap around the stocky neck, and a pair of attenuated arms project from the shoulders. The elongated head boasts incised almond-shaped eyes, an aquiline nose, a rounded chin, and perky ears, with a painted checkerboard pattern adorning most of the forehead. Size: 7.875" W x 12.375" H (20 cm x 31.4 cm).

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces with some small chips, resurfacing, and overpainting along break lines. Small nicks to head, nose, body, and legs, with fading to areas of original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
