Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous hand-built pottery vessel of a sizable form with an orange-painted, egg-shaped body. The figure's head is depicted on the neck with bulging coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a protruding upturned nose, large circular ear spools, and black-painted tattooing around the eyes and mouth - all beneath a tall crown/headdress adorned with ridged vertical appliques just beneath the upper rim. The figure sits with applied, upraised legs and holds a small kero (cup) in both petite hands. A striking example of this type - well-modeled, skillfully constructed, and painted in rich black and orange pigment on a creamy white ground. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 9.75" W x 18.4" H (24.8 cm x 46.7 cm).
