Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A fine textile fragment, tightly-woven from natural camelid (llama or alpaca) fibers in hues of claret red, golden caramel, chocolate brown, and jet black. The composition features several abstract wild feline - most likely jaguar - visages and forms. The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. Mounted on a red fabric backing and set in custom mat and lucite box frame. Size: 6.5" L x 5.5" W (16.5 cm x 14 cm); 14.25" L x 11.25" W (36.2 cm x 28.6 cm) with custom mat and lucite box.
