Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Bactria, ca. 2000 to 1700 BCE. A hand-carved steatite stamp seal of a discoid form and of light gray and sage green colors. Incised on the stamp face is a right-facing Bactrian camel that exhibits a characteristic pair of humps atop its back. The camel's shaggy body stands atop a vertically striated ground with four delineated legs and presents its tapered head atop an enormous, curved neck. A quartet of foliate forms fill the empty spaces around the creature and creates a more dynamic presentation. A ring handle on the back enables this stamp to be suspended from a necklace cord. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 2.1" Diameter (5.3 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection bequeathed from Joel Malter collection, California, USA, before 2004
