Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved volcanic stone dwarf figure in a crouching position with curled arms placed atop the protruding chest. Dwarves were thought not to be individuals with physical abnormalities but rather as seers of the divine with supernatural abilities. Their stunted size indicated that their powers were more highly-concentrated than in those of normal stature and were regularly consulted as shamans in their community. Concurrently, dwarves were regularly sacrificed to the gods as special, spiritually-potent offerings. Size: 2.375" W x 4.125" H (6 cm x 10.5 cm)
