Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian to Chorrera culture, ca. 2300 to 300 BCE. A white stone sculpted into the shape of a jaguar tooth and incised with facial features that are string cut in low relief. The anthropomorphic figure has both hands folded over his chest in a classic praying or reverence position. The piece is imbued with layers of iconographic meaning given the symbolism of the jaguar in the Pre-Columbian world - a revered animal with supernatural characteristics, enhanced by its beauty and ferocity. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery - its spotted coat compared to the starry night sky. Size: 8.5" L x 2.5" W (21.6 cm x 6.4 cm)
