Description:

Pre-Columbian, northwestern Argentina (Calchaqui Valley to San Juan Province), Aguada Culture, Early Period, ca. 600 to 700 CE. A beautiful mug from a little known culture, this is a blackware vessel with a tall body, flaring mouth, and delicate strap handle on one upper side. The surface on the interior and exterior is a high-fired black. Incised motifs wrap around the exterior - repeated curled forms with stippled interiors that resemble antlers or some other abstracted zoomorphic form. People in Aguada lived in small communities at the foot of the Andes and left almost no architectural remains, but they had robust trade with the complex urban cultures of the mountainous regions. Size: 4.95" W x 4.45" H (12.6 cm x 11.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, USA
