Description:

Pre-Columbian, Caribbean / Florida, Taino / Arawak people, ca. 15th century CE. A heavy, large stone axe (celt) that widens at its blade end. The axe is unsharpened, though it does bear a mark having been hafted. The Taino were prolific stone carvers, with ceremonial axes and blades being the most well-known artifact from this culture. Ones like this example may have been used as a form of money, while others, carved into a petal shape, seem to have been dedicatory offerings. Size: 9.4" W x 4.05" H (23.9 cm x 10.3 cm)
