Description:

Prehistoric, ca. 5000 BCE. The massive, granitic stone axe head with 3/4 groove and flattened bottom. Such heavy and cumbersome examples were capable of felling trees or shaping a dugout canoe. Tools changed as the needs of the ancient Americans evolved into ever more complex situations, and this type of ground stone object was an indication of a more sedentary lifestyle involving heavy duty woodworking implements. Created by pecking, grinding, and polishing, this type of object held-up to more rigorous and prolonged use than chert or flint examples. 6.50"L x 4.25"W.

Provenance: From an old, private collection, central Illinois, since the 1950's.
