Description:

South Asia, Indus River Valley, Mehrgarh, ca. 2600 to 2500 BCE. Buff clay human figurines of Mehrgarh are the oldest clay figurines that have been found in South Asia. While the earliest examples were relatively simple and minimalist, later examples like this female figure demonstrate markedly greater sophistication and show more elaborate hairstyles and prominent breasts. Note her radiate hair spikes, stylized facial features, voluptuous breasts, and pendant necklace. Although her arms are missing, she probably once held a baby, hence the popular term "mother goddess". Intended for a high status individual, a wonderful example of this Neolithic mother goddess. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: figure itself measures 4.5" H (11.4 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) with stand.

Provenance: Estate of Paul Anavian, Los Angeles California.
