Description:

India, ca. late 19th century CE. This is a striking bronze sculpture of Nandi, the bull who serves as Shiva's mount in Hindu mythology. Nandi sits proudly atop a multi-level pedestal, head thrown back, with decorative yokes around his neck. Behind him, a cobra flares out its hood with decorative marking and a fierce face. The cobra is known as a naga, a deity taking the form of a large snake (in this depiction, much larger than a bull!). Both animals are symbols associated with Shiva. This is a large, beautiful piece that looks clearly antique but still in excellent condition with clear form and detail. Size: 9" L x 8" W x 16" H (22.9 cm x 20.3 cm x 40.6 cm)
