Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque), ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A set of 5 miniature pottery artifacts from the ancient Jamacoaque culture consisting of 2 heads and 3 figural whistles. Each head depicts an elderly individual with remains of vibrant pigment. The whistles resemble either a standing zoomorphic figure, a seated anthropomorphic figure, and a seated simian creature. Size of largest (head): 2.1" L x 1.8" W x 1.875" H (5.3 cm x 4.6 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995

  • Condition: Repair and restoration to 2 whistles; all whistles still function as instruments. Each piece with minor abrasions and fading to pigment, with softening to some finer details, and light earthen deposits. Nice preservation to overall forms.
