Description:

Western/Central Asia, Persian, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden recurve bow meant to store and release energy with incredible efficiency. The terminals curve away from the archer when unstrung and bear shallow nocking grooves for the bow string. A handle wrap made of cork maintained the textured gripping surface in both wet and dry conditions. Recurve bows like this example were invaluable weapons to warriors on horseback as they were far less cumbersome than a straight-limbed bow. Size: 28.75" L x 1.2" W (73 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in 2006; ex-private Stamford, Lincolnshire, UK collection
