Description:

Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 19th century CE. A fabulous iron shield with a relief scene of a battle around the walls of the face, and a central boss depicting a chariot. The battle is dynamically portrayed; people are being trampled, horses are rearing, and the soldiers fight with swords and spears. A castle with cannons is also featured, and the central charioteer appears victorious with his spear raised high in the air. This heavy piece was probably used for decorative purposes, since the Victorians were fascinated by medieval life and wished to capture the romanticism of a bygone age of chivalry by recreating medieval styled weaponry. The front surface is covered with a thin layer of brass that adds a golden sheen to the russet patina that embellishes this lovely shield! Size: 18" Diameter (45.7 cm)

Provenance: ex- estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
