Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. A cast brass figure of Garuda. Garuda is a mythical bird who serves as the Hindu god Vishnu's vahana (mount). In Indonesian examples, he is often portrayed as having half-human, half-bird features, and here he is shown with a human-like body, kneeling atop a tall, tiered pedestal. His wings stretch out symmetrically around him, creating a frame; feathers also rise from the top of his head, ending in a point that hints at this beautiful item's original purpose, as a support. Size: 5.5" W x 8.65" H (14 cm x 22 cm); 10.95" H (27.8 cm) on included custom stand.
