Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful example of a kris (or keris), a traditional Indonesian sword. The sheath is composed of an exterior brass jacket surrounding an interior wooden housing, and has a wide upper guard which complements the form of the blade. The handle exhibits an abstract curved form and is carved from the bone of a dugong, a marine mammal related to the more-familiar manatee. Separating the handle from the blade is a copper guard which bears a delicate foliate motif. The forged-steel blade has a series of lovely striations running the length of the slight serpentine waves which taper gently to a sharpened point. A wonderful sword replete with stunning details and expert craftsmanship. Size: 5.875" W x 18.625" H (14.9 cm x 47.3 cm); size of blade: 13.375" L (34 cm).
