Description:

South America, Argentina, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A lovely pair of silvered brass bell stirrups or estribos de campana, each attached to a lengthy leather strap with a tubular brass protector. Each stirrup presents flared walls incised with a shield motif containing the letters "JL" - likely the initials of the owner - surrounded by scrolling floral patterns. A pair of slender arms rise from each foot platform, culminating in an ovoid buckle strap. Perforations along the strap would have allowed the rider to adjust the stirrup height. Size with strap (both about the same): 44" L x 5" W (111.8 cm x 12.7 cm); of stirrup (both about the same): 5" W x 7.2" H (12.7 cm x 18.3 cm)
