Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Songye culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A special wooden nkisi (power or fetish) figure, hand-carved from wood squatting atop a circular plinth, the stylized female body is nude, and a distended abdomen. Nkisi figures can be male or female and are carved as dedicatory effigies to positive ends. As this figure is possibly pregnant, she may have been made to ensure a successful pregnancy. Size: 4" Diameter x 16.5" H (10.2 cm x 41.9 cm)
