Description:

Central Africa, southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Kasai River region, Katanga, Luba culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This collection includes 4 X-shaped copper ingot currency pieces known as Katanga Crosses, or handa. Historically used as trade currency, these equal-armed crosses were cast by local coppersmiths in sand molds, generally measuring around 7.8 inches (20 cm) across and weighing approximately 2.2 lb (1 kg). Katanga Crosses were valued by various ethnic groups in southeastern Congo, particularly the Luba, Lunda, and related cultures, who integrated them into extensive trade networks where copper symbolized wealth and status. Beyond trade, Katanga Crosses played roles in dowries and ritual exchanges and later became icons of regional identity, appearing on the flag and coins of the secessionist State of Katanga in 1960. Size of largest: 10" L x 7.5" W (25.4 cm x 19 cm); smallest: 8.75" L x 7" W (22.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
